Hi. I’m back and ready to write/blog regularly about my art again. I hope/plan to write and publish once a week – every Monday. Will keep it brief/succinct. It’s a good way to organise and make sense of my thoughts and ideas (and better my communication skills), and make plans for new/future works, as well as keep record and document my work and inspo, and journey/progress. I do like to write but sometimes in the past, my overthinking and over-editing mars the process and takes away the fun.
I’ve been looking for a manual typewriter to write these notes/diary entries and other ramblings. (The idea was to type, scan and then post/share on this website.) But I’m also trying to declutter and minimise owning/buying things so have been hesitant about it somewhat.
They can also be quite heavy and difficult to carry/transport, and take up precious space. I can do all my typing/writing work on the phone (then copy and paste to this blog/website) so using the phone is much more convenient/practical and lighter/easier than having and using a typewriter. (But I do like the look and feel of an actual manual typewriter.)
I found a really good cheap one on FB Marketplace the other day, on the way to pick up, but someone beat me to it. Alas, I’m certain another good one will pop up later. It’s a totally different feel and process when using a typewriter. You have to press the buttons precisely and firmly, and there’s less/no room for error, deleting or editing. It’s time consuming and noisy, but I do like that about it – the feel, sound and process of using it.
It’s old school, traditional and romantic. I like the look of the buttons/keys and the pressed/stamped black and red inked fonts and letters on the paper. Perhaps it’s just another excuse to spend and procrastinate. (Did you know that some older manual typewriters don’t have a #1 button/key? Instead, typists/users are required to press the lowercase L to represent the #1 instead.)
Writing/blogging/journaling is a good habit to get into. Keep it short/brief, honest and fun. I find it helps make my foggy thoughts and ideas more clear. It definitely helps record things down for future reference and review. And it helps give direction, perspective and vision. As an artist, it’s good practice and helps me to articulate and share my works, ideas, stories and msgs. I believe it helps with manifestation too.
January flew past so quickly and hard to believe we’re in mid Feb already. Closing date for the Archibald Art Prize et al next month so have been planning and prepping for them. Closing dates for the Artbank and Burwood Art Prize are also coming up (both are free to enter). And the Incognito Art Show is due in May. A lot to do but we must enjoy it. And one thing at a time. Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras season has commenced. Have fun and stay safe and fine. That’s all for now.
